What if the culture within a company became a place of healing for its employees? What if people could learn to speak up and voice their opinions even after growing up in families who valued their silence more than their expression? What if employees who were raised by parents concerned only with their compliance began practicing being innovative and creative?

Psychological Safety & Mistakes

Simon Sinek, author and founder of “The Optimism Company” believes the trust within the work place is crucial to a thriving environment. Perhaps one way this may happen is to build a culture within the workplace that is psychological safe. Simon Sinek believes that trusting teams are critical in the work place (How to Build Trust, 2023).   In sharing his top tips, Simon Sinek describes psychological safety as being able to admit you need more training or made a mistake without fear of derision or repercussions (How to Build Trust, 2023).  In that case, I wonder, how psychologically safe were the homes many employees grew up in?  Was it safe to admit to making a mistake?  Or were they ridiculed, lectured or ignored? 

Leadership That Builds Trust

So, what is needed to build trusting teams? Simon Sinek believes leadership qualities are crucial to building trust. Helping those around you, actively listening to what they have to say, demonstrating empathy and the willingness to look foolish are qualities that build trust among teams, according to Simon.  Assisting colleagues and listening actively demonstrate respect and value for others. The willingness to look foolish keeps the needs of his colleagues in mind over maintaining an authoritative image. In other words, leaders who care more about the people they serve than the position they fill are crucial.  They have the capacity to build a culture of trust that brings out the best in their employee. Great leaders provide an environment where colleagues can heal from their past and express gifts that may have long been suppressed.
